Why do some people succeed without apparent effort? Do we take it for granted that these people are simply luckier than the rest? Do we think it is a matter of chance or unfairness? Some people are born with certain innate abilities, or in certain family and/or economic environments that by nature make it easier for them to achieve success, but all this does not guarantee anything if the person does not exploit those abilities. On the other hand, we can find people with profiles to whom things have not been easy because they do not belong to these wealthier groups. However, we observe cases such as Tony Robbins or Oprah Winfrey, who are currently people known worldwide for the work they do in order to inspire people and for whom things were not easy in the past.
So what makes the difference?
We are talking about attitude. Collins dictionary defines attitude as: “Your attitude to something is the way that you think and feel about it, especially when this shows in the way you behave” (Collins, 2021).
Conversely, we find the “attitude of mind” which, also according to the Collins dictionary would mean: “Your attitude of mind is your general way of thinking and feeling” (Collins, Collinsdictionary, 2021).
The way you look at things, how you channel and process them, and how you use the resources you have to either leave things as they are or transform them, define your attitude.
According to Times Square Chronicles: “This simply means we are as lucky as we take ourselves to be. Luck brings about luck. This is the reason why optimistic people are considered to be the luckiest people” (TimesSquareChronicles, 2019).
According to Psychology today: “Yet life is not all a matter of luck. There are those who come out ahead so often as to strain statistical law. For that reason, it’s been suggested that some of what’s called luck is really a matter of attitude and personality (Mason, 2009)”.
We can speak broadly of the "Success Quotient (SQ)", which according to some psychologists determines the potential for a person to succeed in the future and is formed around 10 years of age from characteristics of the individual's parents.
According to business world: New studies and researches indicate that emotional intelligence, which is measured by the Emotional Intelligence Quotient, is a better indicator of success than the more traditional measures such as Intelligence Quotient. Emotional intelligence is the base of making sound decisions, which shows constant high performance. It has nothing to do with being soft, emotional and kind, but with the ability to feel, understand and apply the power and acumen of emotions in an effective way in order to ease high collaboration levels and productivity (BusinessWorld, 2014).
Thus, we could talk about the person's attitude towards situations and the objectives he or she wants to achieve as part of the soft skills that the E-STEPS project deals with. A person who is more predisposed, who has a more proactive attitude, who is resilient in the face of obstacles, will be more likely to succeed in life and regarding their personal and professional paths, therefore in accessing the labor market, either through a contract or through self-employment.
